Term (Index) Definition
stimulated emission  process that increases rate of photon generation in semiconductor; emitted photons are coherent; light emission in laser diodes is based on stimulated emission.
LASER, laser  Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation; laser is the most common source of coherent, monochromatic radiation.
spontaneous emission  photon generation in semiconductor device as a result of a spontaneous, as opposed to stimulated, conduction-to valance band recombination; emitted photons are incoherent; light emission in LEDs is a result of spontaneous emission.
