Term (Index) Definition
spontaneous emission  photon generation in semiconductor device as a result of a spontaneous, as opposed to stimulated, conduction-to valance band recombination; emitted photons are incoherent; light emission in LEDs is a result of spontaneous emission.
radiative recombination  electron-hole recombination process in which energy is released in the form of electromagnetic radiation; in the case of band-to-band recombination energy of radiation released corresponds to the bandgap of semiconductor.
stimulated emission  process that increases rate of photon generation in semiconductor; emitted photons are coherent; light emission in laser diodes is based on stimulated emission.
