Term (Index) Definition
quantum dot  particle of semiconductor so small that its properties are no longer controlled by the laws of classical physics, but instead, are controlled by the laws of quantum physics - in such extremely confined geometries (essentially zero dimensional) free electrons, in contrast to 3D bulk semiconductor, interact with each other; as a result, semiconductors in the form of nanodots display eletronic/photonic properties different from those displayed by their bulk counterparts.
Term (Index) Definition
nanocrystal quantum dot, NQD,  NQDs are nanocrystals smaller than the diameter of Bohr exciton in the bulk of crystalline material of the same chemical composition; due to the quantum confinement NQDs feature much different from bulk material electronic and photonic properties; promising in several applications including displays and lighting; often referred to simply as a "nanodot".
