Term (Index) Definition
non-radiative recombination  electron-hole recombination process in recombination of electrons and holes which does not produce photons, but mostly phonons; i.e. not radiation is generated; occurs in semiconductors featuring indirect bandgap.
radiative recombination  electron-hole recombination process in which energy is released in the form of electromagnetic radiation; in the case of band-to-band recombination energy of radiation released corresponds to the bandgap of semiconductor.
recombination  process resulting in annihilation of free charge carriers in semiconductor; reversal of the generation process; typically electron recombining with hole looses energy and moves from the conduction band to valence band.
phonon  a “packet”, or quantum, of energy of lattice vibrational wave, i.e. periodic variation in the lattice spacing moving across the crystal with a speed of sound; e.g. generated during absorption-emission processes in indirect bandgap semiconductors.
photon  a “packet”, or quantum, of electromagnetic energy; flux of photons constitutes electromagnetic radiation; interactions of photon with semiconductor are determined by photon’s energy (hí) and bandgap of semiconductor (Eg); energy of incident radiation is absorbed by semiconductor when hí > Eg; energy of photons emitted by semiconductor device hí = Eg.
