Term (Index) Definition
infrared detector  photodetector made using semiconductors featuring energy gap Eg below about 1.5 eV; typically ternary compounds with tunable Eg such as InGaAs; also II-VI compounds such as CdHgTe, and others.
IR  infrared (radiation); wavelength from 0.7 micrometer to 15 micrometer; invisible; often used for heating purposes.
photodetector  semiconductor device which electrical characteristics change upon illumination with light featuring energy higher than semiconductor's energy gap; semiconductor (energy gap) must be selected to match wavelength of radiation to be detected.
