fluorescence,  mechanism producing ligh emission by the solid other than conduction band-to-valence band (band-to-band)recombination of the electron-hole pair; excitation by energy from outside source (e.g. UV or X-ray irradiation) is needed to initiate fluorescence; electrons excited to the higher level release energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation in the form of visible light (lower energy than energy of excitation energy) upon their de-exciation to the ground level.
