Term (Index) Definition
electronic device  a semiconductor device which operation is based on the interactions of electrons and holes (generation-recombination, transport) in the solid; electron is acting as "information carrier"
electron  negatively charged particle in an atom; carrier of smallest (elemental) electric charge of 1.60X10-19 C; carrier of negative charge in semiconductors.
photon  a “packet”, or quantum, of electromagnetic energy; flux of photons constitutes electromagnetic radiation; interactions of photon with semiconductor are determined by photon’s energy (hí) and bandgap of semiconductor (Eg); energy of incident radiation is absorbed by semiconductor when hí > Eg; energy of photons emitted by semiconductor device hí = Eg.
