Term (Index) Definition
VCSEL  Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser; semiconductor laser in which generated radiation is propagated vertically, i.e. in the direction normal to the semiconductor surface and p-n junction plane rather then horizontally (conventional operation mode), i.e. in the direction parallel to the surface and p-n junction plane.
EEL  Edge Emitting Laser
Surface Emitting Laser, SEL  same as VCSEL; generated radiation is propagated in the direction normal to the surface; potentially superior to Edge Emitting Laser (EEL) providing strict requirements regarding device configuration are met; allows more efficient coupling to the optical fiber than EEL.
