2.2. Semiconductor Devices
The unique features of semiconductor materials are exploited in the very wide array of semiconductor devices. By definition, a “semiconductor device” is a piece of semiconductor material shaped and processed in such way that it will be capable of performing a predetermined electronic and/or photonic function(s).
The selection of processing methods and the ways they are applied are driven entirely by the specific needs of the final product of the process, i.e. fully functional semiconductor device. Hence, semiconductor fabrication processes should be considered with at least some reference to the specific type of the device.
